Content is King! How to Build an SEO-Friendly Website

SEO is one of the simplest and yet hardest things to get right when you're creating a website, it can be easy to get caught up in all the hype and buzz words like Deep Linking, Black and White Hat SEO, Spiders, Bots and SERPs! Making it all seem too complicated and beyond the realms of a mere mortal, but nothing could be further from the truth, the key thing to remember is that Content is King!

What I mean is that by simply updating your site regularly with fresh original content will get you half way there, combine this with good keyword usage and linking to your content from within your site (internal linking) will get you another big step further, in fact if you just do these things and nothing else you'll see good results in your Google rankings.

If you want to go from good to great results, then (and only then!) you should start looking into fine tuning your SEO techniques, but make sure you don't forget that it is just fine tuning and that your original content is the foundation you're building on top of.

Here are a couple of techniques that you can use to make your site even more SEO friendly:

Create a Content Calendar

One of the best ways to keep your website up to date and follow a consistent theme is by creating a content calendar with a list of the topics you'd like to cover over the next say 3-6 months. The topics should be based around the keywords that you'd like to target e.g. you could write one article per week and spend the first month talking about web development in Sydney, the second month about responsive web design and so on. By deciding up front what you want to write about can save a lot of time when you sit down each week to write your post.

Share your content on Social Media

Another good way to get your website traffic up is by creating social media pages for your site where you can post links back to your articles and blog posts as you write them, this is what's referred to as Link Building i.e. creating links on other sites that point back to your site. So get onto Facebook, Google+ and Twitter and create a page on each, then when you write a new article on your site post a link to it on each of your social media pages, including relevant hashtags to maximise the reach of your content e.g. "Content is King! How to Build an SEO-Friendly Website #WebDevelopment #WebsiteDesign #SEO".
