Your website is usually the first impression people get of your business, and the first thing people notice when they visit a website is its design, so it's crucial to get off on the right foot with a web design that represents your business in the best way possible.
You don't need to be a professional web designer to know what's good design and what's not, you give your opinion every time you're online when you choose to use the services of one business over another based solely on their website, largely due to how it looks. For example if you're searching online for legal services you'll probably want to find a law firm website that looks professional and gives you confidence that the law firm is also professional and good at what they do, otherwise you'll look elsewhere.
Regardless of how good a company is at what they do, if their website doesn't convey that message through good web design, usability and content, most people will never know.
User experience design (UX)
Web design is about much more than colours and pretty pictures these days, just as important as how a website looks is how easy it is to use and how intuitive it is for visitors to navigate and interact with.
User experience design or UX is a relatively new field in web design and development that has emerged as the industry has matured and as websites become more and more advanced. It's centred around the flow of a website and how intuitive and user friendly it is, a simple example of UX design would be to have a rule that any page in your website is accessible from any other page in a maximum of three clicks to help ensure that it's easy for users to navigate.
Other examples of good user experience design that we all take for granted are predictive text and spell correction when searching in Google, how often do you start typing something and a few letters in Google pops up with a suggestion that's exactly what you want, or other times when you mistype something only for Google to see your mistake and show you the right results anyway. Behind seemingly simple functionality like this is some extremely advanced programming logic, all done for improved UX to make our lives that little bit easier.
